HORSES OF THE SEA

HORSES OF THE SEA

A Poem by jeannemarie coulter

HORSES OF THE SEA
carefully clinging to coral with his prehensile tail
the father seahorse nurtures his young
in a pouch on his front where is lifemate deposited her eggs
while his lady drifts about close and watching
for the babies to burst forth as fully developed miniatures
in the warm color resplendent,
life abundant world of coral and mangrove
using delicate back fins to dart from coral to sea grass
with tiny pectoral fins on the side of their elegant heads to steer
drawing brine shrimp in for sustenance
through elongated snouts
just another small living wonder
gifted by god's exquisite design
to our delightful water worlds...
