To Whom Shall We Go

To Whom Shall We Go

A Poem by Jeff Bresee
"

I once beheld an ancient scene...

"

I once beheld an ancient scene as though it were to me a dream

where many people gathered to the Lord.

Disciples came from all around and at his feet sat on the ground

to hear the words of he whom they adored.

But on this would be fateful day, the Savior spoke a different way

of doctrines deep and hard to understand.

Then many who before were clear now said, “these things are hard to hear”

and thus, the tempter quickly was at hand.

For in their hearts he placed the seed of doubt which murmuring did breed

so, Jesus paused and asked those in the crowd,

“Doth this offend you? What if ye shall see me in all majesty

ascend to whence I came above the cloud?”

Then sadly as the story goes, disciples turned and rent their clothes,

resolving that with him they’d walk no more.

So then by the Twelve the Savior passed and quietly he turned and asked

with sadness in his eyes unlike before,

“Will ye also go away?”, then paused to hear what they would say,

and Peter from his heart stood up and said -

“To whom shall we go for we know, thou art the one sent here below.”

“Thou art the Christ, the Everlasting Head.”

Then after this the dream did fade, but on me an impression made

and so, I took a long deep look inside.

If I’d been in the crowd that day, would I have had the faith to stay

or walk away instead because of pride?

I wish that with a heart that’s pure I could state that “I know for sure!”

“I’d never walk away and him forsake!”

But something whispers soft to me - “rather in humility,

pray always… lest the same path you might take.”
