I Was Only Sixteen

I Was Only Sixteen

A Poem by Jeremy Bjelland

I was only thirteen,

My older brother was giving me a ride,

We met up with some of his friends,

For some reason I had feeling inside,

I knew something was going to happen,

Something was going to be bad,

I buckled up my seatbelt,

And held on the arm rest with my hand,

We were racing for some reason,

My brother thought it was exciting,

I told him to slow down,

But he just ignored me,

Then he lost control,

T-boned a van,

We were both all right,

But we ended up killing a man,

My brother went to jail,

He was only sixteen,

I don't want to think about it,

I still have it in my dreams,

Every time I go to visit,

He has a hard time looking into my eyes,

Every time he does,

He can't help but to cry,

It hurt him worse than it did me,

It's a whole different life for him,

I love him so much,

I can't wait till he's home again,

He feels so sorry,

He regrets what happened that day,

He wants to tell me he loves me,

But he's scared it will scare me away.
