The Spider in My Bathroom

The Spider in My Bathroom

A Poem by Jessica Jean

I would write about my anxiety

But I would much rather write about

The spider in my bathroom

He lives under the mirror cabinet

In a crook I can never find

And he only comes out at night

To hide under the faucet

And I am careful

To never let him on my fingers

He is icky and big

Black and spiny

And I jump back

Whenever I spot him

But he just glides away

Back to his messy web somewhere

He is careful and watchful

As am I of him

He does not wish to be squashed

And I do not wish to be touched

He is too big for me though

He need not worry

Until I find a big book

To smash him

This was an interesting read! What a great analogy you made, comparing your anxiety with the scene you describe. I see the bathroom as the inside of the author's mind. There are some cracks in the walls, where elusive thoughts, just like spiders, can hide from us, just out of reach... The faucet is the voice, the creativity, life itself. The spider is the doubt that holds us back. Comes out at night, when we dream and are vulnerable. By smashing it, we are set free. But then again, that's just my interpretation! ;) Well done!
