Cloud Coverage

Cloud Coverage

A Poem by Justin August

I went outside at high noon the other day,
hoping to bask in the sun and enjoy
the warmth and light that it gives without thanks.
Unfortunately, the cloud coverage
blocked the light, leaving only the silhouette
of something vaguely resembling a known shape.

That same night at midnight I went by the beach
to see the stars and gaze at the endless infinity
gazed upon by history and future alike, blazing freely.
That same night, the sky was the same as day, and
the light of stars was smothered by cloud coverage,
extinguishing the light which guided kings and lovers.

That day and night I wanted something to take the cloud coverage
from my mind and transplant it to something outside of me,
and with it my doubts and fears and anxieties that covered hope.
Despite the sun being prevented from shining as bright as it could,
and the night sky's allies being blocked from interfering,
the wind of the new day took care of it all, and the next day
hope reigned supreme, as dawn overtook the clouds.
