When You Left Me

When You Left Me

A Poem by Josie E. Cook M. A.
"

Sad thoughts about you and now it is permanent.

"

When You Left Me

Turning towards the moving shadow,

That I felt touching my face,

Thinking about what it means to love so much,

The one that is the hardest to love

                     and

Being pushed away.

Repeated mistakes becoming the reoccurring culprit,

Our unmade bed

full of scattered lumps and messy, entwined blankets

With pastel sheets untucked and the corners unmade

Our sliding closet doors slightly cracked,

Viewing your hanging shirts and faded jeans,

The things I bought you going unused

Some of them discarded and resting on the floor

Below,

They are so haphazardly arranged, as I stare

At one plaid dress shirt with a matching silk tie

Clipped to the plastic hanger.

For a long time, I take in the unwanted scene,

Tears fall on their own

At some point, I move to our bed,

Stretching out on it,

Then sobbing into my pillow,

Where I continue until there are no tears left,

The pillow damp beneath my face,

I turn to stare at the moving ceiling fan,

The light fixture is off and dusty

The whole tiled ceiling feels old and tired

To my damp eyes,

Getting up with my mind racing about you,

This makes it hard to breathe

It feels like a panic attack,

And, I know you won't be back.
