She Says I Love You

She Says I Love You

A Poem by JR

She says, good morning I love you, as soon as he wakes
smiles with thousand dollar teeth
he showers, and she cooks
egg whites, nine grain toast, and strong coffee
hums and hunts through his phone
to read his texts from the night before
sends him on his way with a peck on the cheek,
I love you have a good day
sits on the couch, logs into his Facebook account
and rejects eight friend requests including ones
from both his kids
getting her hair done, thinking about his daughter
that b***h
and his runt of a son
logs into his gmail and marks everything Read
also, who can she get to put a tap on his work phone?
drops him lunch, peck on the cheek
I love you have a good afternoon
all the time eyeing that f*****g work phone
home in time to add calandar reminders to his planner
her brother is coming for the weekend
her oldest grandson is graduating
her son will need his rent paid soon
he gets home tired, they go out for dinner
she drives so he can get drunk and
while he takes a piss, she catches up
opens his phone to read three texts from his daughter
that b***h
and one from his runt son, nothing to worry about,
she lets them stay Unread
picks at the free bread
taps her long salon nails
just the perfect shade of red
how much better she thought
how much better could
this be
how much better
would this be
if I could just
f*****g
get inside
his head?
They lie in bed, his back to her
his breath growing calm
and slow
staring at the ceiling she says,
goodnight I love you
again thinking of the gap
of that f*****g
work
phone.
