Reckless

Reckless

A Poem by Jeff McHugh

He was as reckless as they come.
Throwing himself around like a wrecking ball
The harbinger of sleepless night and broken hearts
The antagonist of countless love songs

He was as reckless as they come
East to West, Slash and burn
Unfazed by his actions
Always on the run

He was as reckless as they come
Until Her, his Cleopatra
Old habits fail to dissolve with time
Lightning strikes twice

He was as reckless as they come
The cause of his own broken heart
and like Faustus,
His screams for redemption echoed in his past

He was as reckless as they come.

Some people are born reckless, but some also never change. No matter who may come along. We are often doomed by our own freedom. I love how you referred to the woman as Cleopatra, as if she was someone rare that had come back from the dead in order to help take him down a new path. But again, some people never change and our future is doomed.
