Passive Characters

Passive Characters

A Story by Diana Wolf (Jacqueline Stone)

Passive characters are driven by the plot

Carried on by the whims of others

Whether it be the villain or anything else they are carried

They can only react to things around them

Having the their legs swept out from under them constantly and they need to scramble to find new ground before the next sweep takes them away again

Always the damsel being swept away by the villain, the world at large, and even the hero

Your cardboard cutout of a character would last a day on its own

A fun puppet but nothing more

Having pity or encouragement sent their way by the reader or general audience

Either accepting their fate because that is the character’s trope to fill

Or waiting to see something different so the doll they have come to love

Or despise can be fleshed out and have a back bone

To see the character learn when to pick a fight or make time for tea.
