Why

Why

A Poem by Diana Wolf (Jacqueline Stone)
"

This is about losing a young life.

"

Why did this happen?

Why am I destine to lose you after only barely meeting you?

Your enduring habits I thought would last for years are cut short

Why can’t I help you in anyway

Even hope is gone because it’s a foregone conclusion

I wanted the world to see you and get to experience your foolish joy and lovey flighty nature

None will feel your kisses

Experience your near misses

See the curious wonder on your face as you find something new

Watch you touch and explore and cower and succeed

The bounce in your step is almost gone as the fever racks your brain

I was excited to see you meet more of the world, but how can I hope for that now?

Even if I could show you everything and you could meet everyone what would your memory be?

I love you and I have loved you since I met you, so I will stay with you in these hours because that is the only thing I can do.

I can lose you early, or I can love you now returning your snuggles, and kisses and smiles.

With the knowledge that there is a hitchcockian time bomb ticking that I am aware of but cannot know the counter.

Solid in the knowledge that at some point soon you will close your eyes and it will go off…
