Clearing Ground

Clearing Ground

A Poem by julie holland

I did the hard work today
In between sips of coffee.
I did it with one hand-
Never putting my cup down.

Brick by brick I lifted and cleared.
I reminded myself of those Madison Avenue men in the '50s
Who never seemed to set their drinks down.
Except my distraction was a different one.

I'm building my own playground.
There's still so much left to dig up and clear away
From this burial site that's no longer sacred.
