my non de plume

my non de plume

A Poem by Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)
"

nonsense but true!!!

"
Emily, Elizabeth Sarah or Emma
the names all spell romance and old world charm
I wish i could be Emily who grew up in an old farm
Or maybe Elizabeth the princess with the crown
who ruled all the lands around
or Sarah who had a pony on which she rode
to town each day
or Emma  on that island that was so NY hippy and gay
Im left with my name Julie its so true
I feel its from the sixties from an actress we hear of one or two
Anyway lets be happy with our names
our parents chose for us
at least we dont have Geraldine or Fergus
or something equally disgust

I want to write with fountain pen
and then I see my laptop over there
I plug it in and get my chair
and coffee and biscuit lay waiting over there
we write to please
to please ourselves
the writer author in all of us
I wish i could condense my life into
ten pages but there is a lot that would lay untold

so for now ill sip my coffee now
and sit on easy chair
the sun it shines on all of us
we are writers who just love to share
so to all of you writers out there in land of memory sticks
and coffees, wines and  olives on all of your cheesy toothpicks
lets rejoice that we love this
that we are one the same
lets treat each other well
for writing is our game
Goodnight sweet writers of the night
wherever you may be tonight
x

There is a story in every name that much is true. I think everyone looks at their name at some point and decides it doesn't suit them. Or, I should say, that the name does not suit their purpose. I myself have many names and possibly many more that are unknown to me. You maybe Julie now but one day you may stumble across a new name and with it a new story.

pen names are curious...for different reasons. Some want to hide their identity....like Plath when she published the Bell Jar...Dickinson published 11 poems in her lifetime, anonymously...
Some use them because they want to be someone else...just like some actors love acting because it allows them to be other people, often because they have had not so wonderful lives.
Some of us use a pen name because we feel that is a part of us that should have its own identity...

I feel lucky to write, but more like a conduit. The words just come and most often i don't feel responsible for them...thus many many years ago i decided on non de plume----he writes the poetry, the regular me wonders how and why---
i really like this poem, and relate.

What a delightful poem, Julie! Our names do define our beginnings and 'in the middles', don't they! As an Emma, I smiled at the 'on that island that was so NY hippy and gay - ' I feel as if life has begun all over again!!

Your thinking has led to words that are gently inspiring - thus - delightful, thank you.
