Ode to Johnny “country twang”

Ode to Johnny “country twang”

A Poem by Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)

Country twang
She had the strongest sweetest
girly country
Twang

As the song began
I was almost on my knees
Smiles as big as
A brand new Cadillac

A new beginning
A new love affair
In motion
Had only
Just Began

On that stage
She twirled
Her skirt
And made them laugh
I watched her from side backstage

The guitar string
Had set the deal
A rolling
I’ll thank it much later

Life will never be the same
For Johnny boy

June bug
I know your voice by heart

Daddy made me turn it off
So many years ago
On the old radio
So many summer nights ago

It don’t matter
I had you
In my future
But didn’t know that
As a boy
Back then

When fields we’re
Wide
And full of cotton crops
And heat was bad at middays sun
We just kept on
Pickin as Daddy had
A contract to fill

Like I’ll pick my
Love songs for you
All my life long

And daddy
I’ll never forget her
Sweet old songs
It lives forever long

The radio is long since gone
In some forgotten
Place now
The fields are probably
Houses now and the
Memory is all there
Even though
I’m long since gone
I look down and see it all
My mumma and siblings
All young and singing
From her heavenly hymns book
As my Daddy Ray walks through the back door
Swearing cussing at me
It should of been you
God you took the wrong son !

And Jack I missed you so
But I’m with you now and June bug too
And my family too
It seems to me
Time heals and fixes everything
Even for a boy named Sue

June bug said she was caught in Johnny Cash’s
Guitar strap That night
And she said to the audience he was a strapping boy too
I’ll always recall just that !

Ain’t that just where it’s at !
Said the Man dressed in black
