Horse tale

Horse tale

A Poem by Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)

He alighted his horse
Left him there to
Thirst
While he went in for a
Few pints of beer

Just then an old passer by
Toothless
Patted his trusty
Grey mare
The mare turned
And winked
The toothless
Man
An expert
In horses
From his youth to present day
Saw the hoofs
Saw the marks of time
The neglect
He looked in the pub window
Saw the owner
Tipped his hat to him
And with the strength of two men
Ran to the horse
Rode him home
Bareback and all

The owner of that horse
Hours later
Stumbled out
And threw up on the
Front verandah of pub
Just where his horse had been

He lay down and choked
On his own vomit

The horse and the toothless
Man

Till their dying days
A long long time after
The neglectful drunk
Had left him
Tied up on the verandah post
On that hot summers day

The horse was buried
Next to the toothless owner
It read
Thanks mate
My toothless man
You saved me from my
Drunk owner who didn’t give a dam

The toothless thief
Grave was
Marked
Goodnight to all
I stole this horse
I did him right
Not wrong

On the drunks grave
He didn’t have a headstone
To engrave
Just a broken
Glass
Someone had thrown
Into a few plastic flowers
Stole from the pub
He drank at
