I Am A Doll

I Am A Doll

A Poem by Justice Gorak

I realize I am a doll

Emotionless, heartless, numb

Dragging, trailing behind my owner

My mother, that is.

She braids my hair, gives me clothing

Even has a perfect smile solidly stitched upon my face

But I feel nothing.

No happiness, no pain.

I don’t ever cry… how could I?

I am a doll.

I am an old doll.

I am beginning to wear and tear

Some of my stitches coming undone

I feel my fake smile growing looser day by day

And as I spend time alone

I unravel my threads, cut them

Watch as I myself come unseamed

Watch as the blood flows out of my body

Recognize the steam of hot tears down my cheeks

Feel pain.

Feel anything

And for that brief moment,

I am a human.

This is a powerful poem. The name carries a lot of meaning because the doll has long been an icon in the world at large . Though a children’s toy, a doll exemplifies a woman with a perfect body exonerating beauty. This poem portrays a summation of a life tasting only transitory joy as a human, or full human. The main character of the poem never had a chance to live life to the fullest because she was always trying to please others and be accepted. Powerful stuff from a young poet. Well done. Are you still writing. ?
