once

once

A Poem by john alan willox

once, as a small boy in scotland,

while walking

with my mother,

we passed a man

who doffed his fedora,

and when i asked why

she smiled and said…

he was being polite…

my father never wore a hat…

wow, what a contrast....the stranger is polite, and the husband acts like a stranger.

such a sad piece...

says something about the man...cold, distant, maybe abusive...

you allow us to wonder that.

i like the shortness of this..it speaks volumes...

... I especially like how this writing half hangs on a hat rack, of sorts ...
