Frenemy

Frenemy

A Poem by Clara Kevie

My frenemy follows me everywhere
(Although I'll admit, at first,
I did not notice their being there).
I skipped around, while in the shadows they lurked
Documenting and taking care
To remember the details of when I was irked.

When my frenemy first introduced themself,
I did not know what to think
they wanted to play, and to amuse myself
I let them. Before I could blink,
My friends all deserted; left me on the shelf
My frenemy said, through a crawl and slink

"Worry not, for I am all you need."
What's more is that with no pain, no fuss.
They said we could feed
Off of each other's anxiety. Thus,
My frenemy was willing to lead
Me on a little journey of just us.

Long and hard we set out to trek
Without asking for assistance or permission,
Until I was a complete wreak.
So tired and awful was I from our mission.
I had had it right up to my neck.
(I even was doubting my prohibition)

I tried to reason with my frenemy
I told them I could not go on
They didn't look back, for their glee
Overpowered--too loud to hear that I'd withdrawn
They dragged me on, ignored my plea
For they were free, elated, beyond.
