A soldier, sending a letter home to his one love.

The Last Letter

Kamran Ali

“More than any other kissed by Nature’s fair,

I adore you, my only love…”

To sit alone is a torture,

Surrounded only by those alike.

We all volunteer to spill our blood,

We volunteer to give our life.

With life comes liberty and freedom,

Given to us from beyond and above.

But we must not forget what we all find,

Not given to us, but found; love.

It was a November morning,

When my eyes wandered to yours;

I realized that moment, as my eyes kept pace,

It was a lonely stranger that I adored.

I think of you always as I stand at battle,

My mind lingers from the sound of shrapnel;

It stings my ears, and hurts my body,

But no pain rivals the loss of somebody.

And that is how I feel,

Alone, and disheveled;

My mind only looks to see

Anything you may resemble.

But it finds no relapse,

No soothing to coat its fire;

Only you can pull me from this dirt,

Your love can raise me higher.

But I pen you now to send a message,

With love and hope, and with realistic presence;

The war is only worsening, I may not return,

To see the woman who made my life a treasure.

I want to apologize for the lies you never heard,

For the thoughts and ideas that never progressed;

I used to think I loved another as fair as you,

Even though I felt the deepest regret.

But I came to realize that love is not lust,

That a desire and a dream are two similar things;

You are my lust; You are my dream;

A soldier’s mind knows no in-between.

It took a war, with many deaths to show me,

That love is not a feeling, nor a hope;

Love is a reality that grabs any who fall,

And treats them well, so they may never elope.

So I am sorry, I truly am,

For telling you this as I sink into land;

But you deserve the best, only the truth,

And I’ve loved you forever, since my November youth.

Farewell is not easy, so I will not say so;

For I am not leaving, only gone a moment unknown.

When I breathe my last breath, I will send it away,

The mail carriers leave every Tuesday.

In that breath will be a message,

My final thought through mouth;

You can read it or save it,

Or send it back out.

No matter what you do,

It will be forever with you;

Death will take me in his arm,

Hold be close, and let darkness imbued.

Remember my message, my last breath sent through mail;

I love you deeply, and let my love be kissed my Nature’s fair.

Thank you for a amazing poem. Great distance and war make a man think. You realize who and what is important.

A deep message is in your poem. Thank you for the outstanding poem.
