Persephone

Persephone

A Poem by Kathleen Hankinson

Excitement flares like a lit torch in my stomach,

His biting, handsome eyes tell me stories too red to hear.

His embrace is so warm, too warm,

Scorching my naked mind.

His fingers grip me firmly and soothe-

Threaten me with mandatory safety.

His chilling breath scrapes my neck with words

I love you, my wife.  You are mine.

But a lover’s words should gently feather you,

Lighten the storm, not darken the clouds.

My flowers are now ash…

My trees are only suffocating, my lakes and rivers

Freeze while my hope disintegrates.

The fear I shiver with is just the uncertainty newlyweds feel.

He lets me return to my mother for a whole half year!

And yet I am still to blame for letting nature wither while

I am away, enjoying, enduring his feverous paradise.
