Poems Don’t TranslateA Poem by Ken SquiresI’ve learned that poems don’t translate through the generations I can speak of
family problems and not fitting in, my age group and younger get
it Like a new life is
easy, like a new job is easy to find. Telling me that I’m forty so I should be able to do this thing on a whim Since they no doubt done it back in there day
Guess when your
refusing to learn, grow and understand nothing has changed When they keep referring to how things were back forty and fifty years ago
So many people these
days don’t get the option of moving out But I know the older
generation doesn’t see that, cause they don’t understand They will point out what we’re doing wrong in a heart beat Telling we need to change our ways, they need to wake up, they need to see this day and age S**t has changed, things aren’t like they were
You can’t loose your job in the morning, have a new one in the evening You can’t walk into a place and say “let me rent it” and BOOM it’ll happen instantly
They don’t
understand how things have changed They think everything is simple like it was back in the day when they were our age
None of them
understand They will always refer to “well in my day” That’s great and all, but it doesn’t matter when it comes to today
It’s like modern
poetry, they won’t be able to relate, they think you can change a
situation Ain’t that easy, never is anymore But they will never learn but they will argue with you all day and all night
Modern poetry doesn’t always translate with different generations
