To a Mother

This poem was written for mothers (mothersday).

To a mother-

Humbled by growth, taught by time and kissed with beauty.

To a mother-

Managing a household with no father figure,

Kids out of control, acting both parents.

To a mother-

Yet to be, awaiting new possibilities, afraid of tomorrow,

Not knowing what lies in the morrow…

To a mother-

Tired of been alone, left to this world- cheated, used, abused and degraded

To a mother

Still mothering herself, trying to dance in her own shoes, longing to be herself

To a mother

gompijeno wa ipelega,     (Today you give birth to yourself)

O i jala mo popelong ya mmu                 (You plant yourself in the earth’s womb)

and grow yourself as semela,                                        semela (a tree)                                   

tlhasetsana ya peo,                      (a budding seed)

legono bashemane, ba rrwetsana, makgosi le badimo                                             (Today, Boys, Girls,  Kings and Gods)

Uphold your name thanking you,

For caring enough, giving enough, fixing enough.

Today you are loved for being you,

 Appreciated for your stubbornness, your patience, your love and warmth.

Thank you for ushering this nation,

Thank you for teaching us; guiding us, always there by our sides,

 You are a Goddess,

To a mother,
