![]() When the battle calmsA Story by Kitalia Emme
I sit, curled in a blanket in the cold of the night. The sky is filled with stars and the smell of smoke a sweat hang in the air.
Fires dance in the darkness specking the encampment with sparks that leap towards the heavens and fade away. The deep voices of men singing a song of war fills my head. My body aches from exhaustion as I sit drifting in and out of a light sleep. A feeling of satisfaction fill my soul knowing that we will win the war, knowing that I have worked hard and saved the lives of our warriors, even if it was only to bring water to the injured and the exhausted. I feel the stirring deep within me to stand and sing, to join them, but I fear my own youth and the approval of my mother. I know that she will frown on it, still, one song. One Song. I had learned a new one from the camp kitchens, but it was one that would bring a blush to even the most uncouth of sailors. Still. To bring my voice in harmony with theirs, to celebrate the simple victory that was surviving the hardships of the days battle. The world is fading faster and faster. Even my desire to join in the song is being overcome by the darkness of slumber as the melody leads me away. Across the bridge into a land of dreams, it guides me. I feel a hand gently lead me from my seat and to my cot. As I lay the world slips into darkness, quiet and cool. No pain. No light. No fear. Just darkness and the distant voices resonating with the cold night air. © 2014 Kitalia EmmeFeatured Review
