Monkey Business

Monkey Business

A Poem by Krista Gallant

I look down and what do I see

Two little peepers looking at me

Tears swelling, about to overflow

Little feet swishing to and fro

Quivering lips turning upside down

Seconds away from a shattering meltdown

I scoop up his face in my palms, he squeaks

Then little fingers pressed against my cheeks

For what I thought were tears of misery

Was merely a desperate act of chicanery

Chubby little arms tightening around my head

Mommy’s little angel knows it’s time for bed

The battle of wits is about to weigh-in

Promises of bed time stories is a sure win

Lullaby songs sung as his eyes close tight

Makes all the hassle worth the fight
