a Poem to Parents

a Poem to Parents

A Poem by kayla
"

I'm not one, but I felt this needed to be written

"

Innocence in short-shorts

and prepubescence

covered in frills and lace:

How did the world become such a place

where ten year old girls flatiron and curl

and dye their hair with blonde highlights

to keep up with the Kardashian girls,

and teenage role models are dancing on poles

for our daughters to imitate the swirls?

Where we let our six year olds

watch the Hangover in our bed,

let them laugh and sit through the nudity

and give them unlimited access to the web

and then wonder why we find their Barbies

in their little hands, "playing sex"?

How did we come up with the idea

that ten year old girls having boyfriends is ok?

Why on earth didn't we think this through,

why didn't we contemplate

that "holding hands" at ten and eight

might lead to pregnancy at a sooner date?

How come we wanna be the "cool parents",

letting our pubescent kids stay the night

at their "significant others" place

and expect them to do right?

And then wonder why their pregnant

(but you never talked about protection)

Why are twelve year olds posed in magazines

as sexual, adult women?

We wonder why there's so many pedophiles..

well I'm telling you, now, so listen:

we can't raise are daughters up like this

to be abused and sexually sentenced.

Remember what a child was

when you were once one?

We didn't have dates, we had play dates,

we were innoceant and young.

We didn't "hang out" all ours of the night,

we were home when the lights came on.

What's happened to the world

that makes this okay,

that children should be forced

to have to grow up this way?

Children are not models or sexual beings.

They're innoceant and childlike and they have feelings.

Their following you and do what you say is okay.

Remember that you have the ability to sway.

This was hard to read. Cuz I purposely don't want to read teen sex stuff or child porn stuff but u are painting a true cruel reality here. Many just want to avoid this problem but are taking it on strong. So I applued u for it. I cringe at certain elements but its necessary to get the message across. :) great job

I totally agree with you ! I'm from the time when "sexy" was an offensive word and grown-up couples kissed in privacy ! Great job =D

I thought it was really good and the message was strong. My parents weren't this way, they always tried to protect me against all of that stuff. But, I knew parents who were like that, and I know some of my friends parents are like that to their daughters. It's really depressing actually how people think stuff like that is okay. I always see moms and dads taking their 5 year olds to R-rated movies and it's like, what are you doing? You know? I wish parents like those parents could read this because I think it would open their eyes a bit to see what they're actually doing to their children.

I think your poem was well-written and thought-provoking. You have to keep in mind that many of these children's parents were still children themselves when they had kids. The quality of parenting has gone down--too many parents want to be "friends", if they want to be bothered at all.

I agree with this poem. Children need to be protected against adult entertainment. I did my best to keep my kids safe. You made many strong points in this poem. The poem need to be shared. i will add this poem by you on my facebook page if you don't mine. A outstanding poem.

Powerful poetry indeed. Unfortunately, we are all trapped in a society that labels this as okay; and I'm positive that soon instead of ten year-old children performing mature acts, it will drop down to six year-old kids.
