MOTHERHOOD

MOTHERHOOD

A Poem by Kristin Noel Stabb
"

Motherhood.. is all about the unconditional love of our children who accept our fears and foibles along with our noble attributes. We're often saved by our children's unqualified love.

"

If you knew what you had done

To damage the lives of your young

To kill any chance of them being

Strong and confident in the world

You would be shocked

And grieved and ashamed

And unforgiving to yourself.

But you don’t know, and probably never will

Because your children have saved you

And refused to spill the beans.

If you knew what you had done

To encourage and inspire

A countless lot of damaged children

Just like yourself,

You would be surprised

Not proud, not acknowledging

Or recognizing yourself

Just disbelieving and saying,

“You’re kidding”.

But, your children would not be surprised

They would say, “O, yes.  That’s our mother.

She’s like that; she’s amazing.”

Very few of the generations of women everywhere

Get televised awards for their bravery,

Their devotion, their determination,

Their wisdom and their humor.

But all live part of their lives

Under lock and key

Incarcerated for crimes they know not

And for which they have never been tried

Except by their knowing and silent children

Who love them.
