Black and White

Black and White

A Poem by kyam

We grew up together
Like friends forever
Police don't understand
We don't have a brand

We don't see our skin
Until you point it out and then
We think how pretty we are
Two hollywood rising stars

Running through the night
We stop and saw a fight
The police think we're involved
They shoot my sister to solve

Ask questions later make their mark
Of course her skin is dark
I'm white so I'm free
Is it the color of me

She bleeds red like I do
They take off her shoe
They lie and say she's the one
The one with the gun

She didn't do it I say
Go on get of here no way
The black one had the weapon
I looked at the phone they had stepped on

Is this the gun, I said does it matter?
Get behind this line no chatter
But she's my sister you see
Just her skin ain't like me

The psychology of fear is - Us and Them. People tend to see what they perceive and truth IS just a perception waiting to happen. Police are as human as those around them at any given instant. Mistakes are made and individuals (both the citizen AND the cop) often CAN and DO cover up an Oooops ...IF they are allowed and held unaccountable. For the cop: it isn't that they aren't trained - it IS about WHAT they are trained to do and how to REACT. And the same goes for the citizen BUT - just where do THEY get THEIR "training"? For the "uninitiated" it's movies; media - social, news, entertainment (games), and others: word-of-mouth, peers, and crowds.

Bad things HAPPEN to BOTH good AND bad people. Even good deeds can be punished. And try to remember - what you think YOU do or see is not always what someone (good or bad or whatever) else sees, perceives, or reacts to ...from even a foot away.

And I am NOT saying blame the victim ...I am saying change the mindset and psychology of fear ON BOTH SIDES of the equation.
