Masked Riches

Masked Riches

A Poem by Kylie Spring
"

Are the things you yearn for in life really what you should be yearning for?

"
The haunted realm
of forgotten dreams,
broken hearts
and crippled sunshine beams.

The earth is mossy
but the trees are bare;
dull and twisted
'round the Elvin lair.

Sparkling chimes have played,
diamonds and rubies glinted,
but it's all an illusion-
the Evil around you is tinted.

Oh, every human is tempted
to enter this enticing place,
but it's too late when they realize
the reality of it's malicious face.

Onyx is turned to coal,
pearls are turned to stone,
the creatures dance and taunt you,
you do nothing but moan.

"I was tempted," You sputter.
You are human, after all;
and you run to snatch up
the rubies that line the wall.

The creatures shake their heads,
laughing, exasperated at your lust.
"We could let you live," They grimace,
"But death is a must."

You try and give the rubies back
but they stick to you like glue.
"Oh woe is me!" You cry,
down falls not one tear, but two.

Eyes peer from behind trees,
snakes slither under the moss,
to see the trial
that you have already lost.

Money, jewels,
and fancy riches;
yet you still can't find the strength
to admit your glitches.

You try to run
but your ankles are tied;
everything around you has changed-
the forest has died.

No sunshine peeks through
(the sky is dark as night),
even the stars seem to fade
over this wonderful fright.

You glance at past victims names,
carved into a tree,
and realize now it's only you;
there is no more 'we'.

"I didn't mean to!" You plead,
but it's not enough
to save you from coveting
all of that stuff.

The ground below you opens
and you stumble through...
tell me reader,
do you want this to happen to you?

A Dante's tale of warning written in the tale.
"Oh, every human is tempted
to enter this enticing place,

I liked the above lines the best. Temptation and greed for all things will lead us to date with the Devil. I liked the question at the ending. Thank you Kylie for sharing the excellent poetry.

Hell, No! Again, brilliant writing. Very descriptive. Made me feel like Bilbo Baggins! Without the hairy feet! Well Done, you're very talented. (Note the use of "you're", Haha)
