Awake...Awake...

Awake...Awake...

A Poem by Nina Love

Drip…

Drip…

A raindrop falls on my cheek,

It startles me awake.

Where…

Where…

Where am I?

It’s too dark,

I cannot see.

Cold…

Cold…

It is so cold here,

In this inky darkness.

Noises…

Noises…

Coming closer

But I cannot scream.

I cannot speak.

Run…

Run…

I must run.

My legs refuse,

I am frozen to the ground.

Closer…

Closer…

It is upon me!

I close my eyes,

I am afraid to see.

Warm…

Warm…

I feel warmth upon my shoulder,

It startles me awake.

My eyes open.

Dark…

Dark…

The darkness is gone,

Replaced by pale morning light.

A man is standing over me,

Hand upon my shoulder.

Dream…

Dream…

It was just a dream?

That darkness,

The freezing cold,

The noises.

It wasn’t real?

Wait…

Wait…

How am I here?

I know I slept safe at home before,

Not here,

Under a gravestone.

Grave…

Grave…

I am in the graveyard?

Real…

Real…

The dream was real…

I look up to see…

Nothing…

Nothing…

The man is gone.

There is no one here,

And this startles me awake.

there is a vagueness in your poem that doesn't reach out to a more vivid sensation
