Immortality

Immortality

A Poem by Lana

Somebody once told me
You ought to be famous
To live forever
As people mourn your death
Like the death of a God
Who had no power over life
Who could've been King
And reign over us
Like a star in the sky
Your iconic figure painted by fans
On millions of canvas
Framed on simple wood
Mounted on millions of walls
All over the planet
Across the universe
You are the image they paint
Buying you for a couple bucks
Included in their living room
As if to say "Now you're one of us"
Nobody knows you
And yet everyone loves the dust
--you left behind after being victimized
By the thief of time
And so after thinking about it
Somebody told me
I ought to be famous
To achieve immortality
That it was the only way
But I kept wondering
What if I do?
What if I leave a trail of legacy?
Different from a snail's journey
No eating, feeding, reproducing
No mediocrity
Only fireworks exploding
In the luxurious sky of my Gatsby party
Where my white mansion overlooking the sea
Seem to be full of light in the dark
Even without any streetlights
Only the moon shining bright
And the dark ocean waves are mine
The world bows down at my sight
As I come out of my balcony
And wave goodbye
The party is over
The guests cry out my name
Like a baby to their mother
And I hear them chanting my name
Them;
They love me but not for who I am
The image, the golden frame
In the mirror I look at paint
Not flesh
No bones, no lungs, no jaws
No mediocrity
I was more than a God
More loved than a parent
What if I was
A forever idol
And then what?
Then what?

We live in a world of fame and its true that fame does lend a sort of immortality. I like your last few lines which draws it all together - a forever idol.
Take care,
Alan

And then the tabloids would be continually trying to dig up dirt on you. Fame is a double edged sword because attention and love are two different things, and many find to their dismay that the spotlight can become a flare with brutal speed.
