Matyres of Love

Matyres of Love

A Poem by Chebem Ike

Our love grew
Like a tender seedling
In the nursery bed of our hearts
Watered by our unassuming smiles
Weeded by our hands locked
In warm touch of the other

It grew unobtrusively
By day, by night
We knew not how or when
But it grew

Bringing forth its first fruit
In our first kiss. It was tender
And green, yes
And still green in this dying memory

But on the day we were to transplant
Our young love
Into the farm of matrimony
Came a torrential down pour
A lightning and a whirling wind

It poured like gossips
It struck like mistrust
It blew like hate
And uprooted our young love
Dashing it forth in the wind

Now here we are forlorn
Lying decaying is the broken pieces
Of our heart on burrowed soil
Which our detractor wished to be our grave

But let this putrfaction do one good
Let it enrich the soil
For seeds to come
So we lie
And die
Matyres of Love..
