A Poem by Kristan Strietzel

I shall post my manifesto as an on-line dating profile

in which I rave of my exceptionalities

and rant at my disappointments in humanity in general

remind oversexed boys that if I just wanted to get laid

I could go to the bar and show cleavage

(like shooting fish in a barrel)

scoff at those who think I'd really buy the whole line about

“I love walks on the beach at sunset”

and really lay into others who post pictures

in which their ex is none too cleverly cropped out

state my reality and rejoice in my foibles

make unrealistic demands

such as complete sentences and kept promises

and expect to find Mr. Right

It obviously works on the basic level--as a wry look at the foibles of online dating-- but it rises above that; the concept of how our ideals (our "manifesto" our faith in "kept promises") clash with our mundane lives and our so-called baser instincts. This is you at your best--intelligent, uncompromising, a wee bit angry, and full speed ahead.
