Old Joe Oak

Old Joe Oak

A Poem by Alexis
"

Keep living for what you love, but don't forget what made you, you.

"
Old Joe Oak, they call him.
'Bout 33 feet tall and can last through any storm ya put'em through.
Lil' Missy looks up ta him; wanna be as big as Old Joe when she grow.
Words been runnin', a big storm coming, bigger than they ever seen!
Old Joe Oak ain't scared, face he wanna show'em how ta be brave as him
But when the storm came, Old Joe became terrified, scared as a dog.
His branches shaking, trembling with fear
Lil' Missy 'bout got torn outta the ground before Old Joe protected her.
Missy looked up ta him, like he was her gran-daddy or some-mm
With all his will, he stood over her, in confidence she will be safe
When the storm was over, Lil' Missy was fine,
Dry as bone!
But Somethin' was wrong!
Old Joe Oak, 'bout 33 feet tall and snapped n' half like he was twig or some-mm
And Lil' Missy said everyday, "I'm gonna be as big as Ol' Joe when I grow."

Using the accents makes a world of difference when used to develop timing, tone, rhythm. personality, and character in your work. This read well after I determined the accent and restarted from the beginning reading aloud.
