A Poem by Arwen Evenstar

You stood in the front lines
carrying your gun
coming to attention
defending friends
defending your country
defending the flag

You called home
when you had a chance
never giving away
information
never hinting at missing home

You always put on
a strong face
walked out into enemy lines
and did your duty

When you came home
you were called a "hero"
never wanting a status
never wanting to be labeled

You laid your arms done
bore your axe
and slipped into a
comfortable life

Watched six grandchildren
be born
gave them a piece of you
gave them memories to remember
gave them a lifetime of hope

When you left
you gave your life as a true
"hero" would
you left with a smile on you face
saying good-bye
leaving behind a legacy

Leaving but an impression
left on the heart
pictures, memories, even words
all held close and never will forget
the sacrifices that you made
to give us our freedom
to make us who we are today

Author's Note

Arwen Evenstar
this was something i wrote for my mom. i wrote this in about 10 mins and it was used for my grandfathers war journal. the journal was used as a christmas gift to his children and grandchildren. he never said much and he was a man of honor and reason. i miss him terribly and i kno he made some sacrifices in his life. but im proud to say he fought in world war 2 and lived to pass the knowledge down to his children.
