Surfeit

Surfeit

A Poem by Donald Meikle

A shirtfront full of tiny red tomatoes

That took the time it takes to eat a half dozen

Bursting on my teeth to drown my thirst

Stepping on both sides of a row of beets

Carefully avoiding the sharper leaves of eggplants

Flip flops crushing fallen fruit  to reach the redder ripe

It took a walk past five humming bird feeders,

Five sun flower trees full of half plucked blossoms

Chirp, she loves me. Cheep, she loves me not.

A leaning row of escaping egyptian onions

Clusters catching on loose clothing

On stalks of  sun seeking green

Summer has exploded around us once again

The kitchen is adorned with Nature's gifts

As am I with two legs full of poison ivy

Taunting me to scratch and spread it

I love the images you have chosen, as the beauty of nature is so enticing. This piece flows so nicely and the last stanza was perfectly tantalizing! You remind me of myself in the garden with a mouthful of tomatoes, yummy! ~ Jude :-)

you put in really good details, i don't know how you chose them, but they fit perfectly, and i love the phrase 'sun seeking green' very nice.

this is beautifully nostalgic. "Five sun flower trees full of half plucked blossoms

Chirp, she loves me. Cheep, she loves me not.
" -------------how innocent and wonderful.

I so love your nature poems... you have a gift of making moods! Your poetry engages my imagination in unconvential way.

How do you not read a poem titled, 'Surfeit'? I couldn't pass it up. Turns out, it was the best judgment I'd shown all day.

I found a new favorite.
