New Year's Day

New Year's Day

A Poem by Donald Meikle

One tiny bird
Puffed so large
his wings won't close
Perched in the stick leaf
Rhododendron
On the only stem
still clinging snow
Tasting it to wet
a tip of beak
Just a wee
Dock'n doris
in sunny frozen
Wind

This is such a vivid scene and as always it shows such a beautiful affinity for nature - I think that says a huge amount about your empathy as human being attune to the world - you make these scenes more vivid by your economy in words. My favourite lines were:

On the only stem
still clinging snow
Tasting it to wet
a tip of beak

But all of this is just beautiful

Oh Donald. My gosh, I so love this one! You present the New Year's Day from the perspective of a bird, of course, you are a passive observer, but you don't judge and this is so wonderful, so rich and meticulously discovered in simple few lines...
