Natalie's Grandpa

Natalie's Grandpa

A Story by Linda alexander

Peter walked so fast that he could reach home and see his grand daughter. Natalie is his grand daughter and she is the icon of his life. Peter wants to see her before she goes to sleep. He reached home half past eight at night. Natalie was about to sleep, so he kissed her softly in her baby blanket as he is mindful if the baby wakes up it will be an issue. Peter was a widower for a long time and was suffering from depression as he stayed alone, long working hour, poor diet, lack of exercises, diabetes and may be few more reasons perhaps. He is a pilot and an occasional drinker. His wife passed away almost twenty years ago. He had great relationship with his children and nephews. Peter continued to work even after his retirement as he wanted to be engaged and busy. The other day he went for bowling and had an small accident with his car it hit against a tree but no reportable damage so he dismissed it. He forgets his remote control for TV at times which may be related to long time night shift and his age.
Peter wondered what is the purpose of his life. He sighed every humans have a purpose in their life and a mission too. He can not relate that strategy to his own life. Duloxetine sixty milligram once daily took care of his depression but occasional suicidal thoughts terrified him, He reported to his psychiatrist and psychiatrist answered if no plans in his mind keep reporting and gave few emergency numbers if needed and advised to keep them handy, The psychiatrist decreased duloxetine the antidepressant dose to forty milligram daily. He lost some weight and it was from duloxetine he believed. He took his daily ensures before going to bed. He walked in the nearby park around twenty to thirty minutes a day whenever he can.
His life changed tremendously when he got a grandchild Natalie. She is eleven months now. His entire focus in life became baby Natalie. He visited her often. He tried to even get out of work little early if he can just to see her before bed time. Natalie became a mild stress buster as well as anti depressant combined. The laugh of Natalie, the staggering initial steps, mama and dada one worded vocabulary, sparkle of her eyes all were excellent joyful moments for grandfather Peter. Harmen is Natalie's mother and she took advantage of each visit  of Peter. Harmen asked for financial help as Harmen is already part time at work related to baby sitting issues, and Peter did baby sitting for few hours here and there.
I can not believe she is almost one year Peter exclaimed. Natalie replied I am already thirty four and dad time flies so fast especially after twenty five. Peter and Harmen laughed together and baby started wiggling underneath blanket. Peter told Harmen I may stay in your house today and go to my place tomorrow as I am off from work. Harmen said of course dad it will help me too. Peter slept in the Couche near the baby crib and Harmen went to her room and she enjoyed the good sleep especially being single mother. Peter slept like a baby and Natalie is a baby so slept as if she is Natalie the gem of her grandpa's life.
