into a competition

to a fools game

this is the fools game
payed in fools gold
played by the tools
of an insidious ideology

The contradiction presented in verse 2 is the theme of this offering. The poet is, I believe, coming down on a certain strain of social thinking that seeks a "level playing field." This kind of thinking in most prevalent on the left end of the political spectrum, where such things as guaranteed incomes and quota systems of various kinds are sanctified. It abhors competition, insists on a radical notion of equality regardless of ability. Fortunately, systems based on such principles usually implode, as did the USSR. Unfortunately, they do much harm before they finally go.
