here there be dragons...

here there be dragons...

A Poem by Brad
"

something from my youth

"

playing in the july air

hot and sweaty

alone in the front yard

the birds sang

the squirrels chattered

a warning that a predator

had made its way

into the woods beside my home

i was chasing a monarch

that was dancing

around the rose bush

mother planted last spring

the orange and black

wavering in and out

of my 6 year old view

then i heard it

a whirring sound

and it hurt my ears

to hear it

i wiggled my fingers

inside them

and felt a small breeze

brush by my nose

the whirring louder

then fading out

i stood in the sun of the western wall

of my brick home

and i tried to shade my eyes

looking back and forth

amongst all the flora

there was something blurry

with a green hue

buzzing from one place

to another

it was eating the butterflies

eating the bees

and it made the strangest sound

like a babies coo

the blur fluttered around to the front

i ran in my keds to catch site of it again

there it was

near the right edge of the drive way

it made sudden movements

left to right

then hovered still

so that i could look at it

it was a dragon

small and snake like

it's wings were insectile

fluttering so fast

i couldn't really see them

it's body writhed in constant motion

it's tiny eyes were yellow and black

i tried to speak

i was both scared and happy

and then as i walked closer to it

it became blurry again

and disappeared

into the july sky...

we could really share some stories, my brother :o) Wonderful wordcrafting, and a truly magical moment. It has been said that once the walls between worlds were thinner, closer together, and it was as easy to slip from one to the other as falling into a well or stepping into your own wardrobe. They say our worlds drifted too far apart and the walls became thick for a time... and now the walls are thinning again. Whenever I glance up at the sky, I wonder if this is the time I will see my dragon again. :o)

I think my frind~ that the air is filled with magikal little bubbles that pop for the right attention~ as children we are more sensitive to the undercurrents that do not abide by man made rules of perception~ I've no doubt what so ever your dragon was real~ but then I'm the girl who had running conversations with horses and wolves and engaged a tree in a game of hide and seek~ =)~

It's funny how these experiences stay with us far into adulthood.

Very cool. WE don't know the whole truth, so hallucination or not, you experienced something. Although, I always pictured dragons as a bit larger... Oh well (disappointment sets in) JK. Nicely written. For a more epic dragon (although much more surreal, try my The Wyrd of the Wyrm. (formerly St. George's Bane well it was only that title yesterday, retitled on its second day! let me know which title you like best)
