The Coward I Am

The Coward I Am

A Poem by luciddreamer

You f*****g slay me

telling me to just stop

being so afraid

sure I'll get right on that

I just been playing around for 50 years

don't you see

It must be nice to not worry about hurt

and be so frikking brave

It must be nice not to back down from a fight

not to run, not to always agree

but damn can't you see

that is just not me

I don't know where to go from here

finally my brain is working and I see

if I want to live my own life

these fears must cease to be

I just wished you could understand

sometimes it is stronger than me

if I don't learn something different

a coward I will always be

Wow, this poem really packs a punch and cuts right to the heart of fear and insecurity, and, for that matter, frustration. Ironically, this poem is not afraid to be brutal, in more ways than one... it's not afraid to address the issue of fear. It's not afraid to admit that fear is hard to overcome. It's not afraid to attack those who have no fear, and who fail to understand fear. Fear is something which is absolutely fundamental to our existence, probably more so than love or anything else... fear defines who we are, as individuals, and as a species. This is an honest, raw, angry, brave, frightened poem... really good :)
