A Poem by Hannah Monttkomepy

Steppin’ to the mic

Breathing heavily through the speaker

Take a breath, stare it down

Count to three

People recall of dreams she says

Martin Luther King had a dream

Black people, white people

People of every race and color

Have had a dream

I had a dream

As I lay in my bed

A dream that comes

Every blue moon.

I saw myself,

Surrounded by color

By beauty & harmony

People laughed

& cried but joyful

dancing with each other

Madmen not around

I had a dream

Of before people’s culture

& language

So I’m throwing it all out

I’m letting it out in the open

I’m lettin’ you know who

What

How I am

Cuz I’m leavin’ it all behind

I’m lookin’ to my Deity

Jehovah, Abba Father

For every hill that needs to be climbed

Every door that needs opened

Every demon I ever face

So I can help every child

So the poor may be rich

And the rich may be poor

The dumb wise

And the blind able to see

I had a dream, she said

A dream of colors harmony & beauty

Where people laugh

Dance & sing

I had a dream

And it starts with me
