Kept like parakeets

Kept like parakeets

A Poem by M. Shepherd

The trees have claimed this place,

they litter themselves on the pavement.

In Los Angeles they're caged,

the pavement contains them.

But you can see where they scoff and erupt from the sidewalks

Brushing aside the cement and imperialist intent

They're chewing through their leashes

Ripping up their leases

Howling like fish

what the F**K

I didn't sign up for this

One day these trees will hold their breath

And one by one we'll meet our death.

-- powerful, dramatic, hard-hitting poetry... -- and completely unforgettable... i won't be able to look at a tree without thinking of this piece...
