Six

Six

A Poem by secretlyme

Once when we were six-
With glamorous crowns of wilted daisies
And our lips painted red with cherry Popsicle-
We lay on the lawn and wished our fears away.
Once when we were six-
With our hands sticky with apple juice
And our dresses stained with the wetness of the grass-
We sang and we danced and shouted at the world.
Once when we were six-
The air thick and sweet and warm
The gentle glow of fireflies lighting up the night-
We lay on the lawn on a ratty towel
Our cotton sungowns faded and damp
Our grubby hands intertwined.
Once when we were six-
we spent the night telling secrets,
Giggling over nothing,
Making up stories of stars
Stories of mysteries and magic and wonderful treasures untold.
Once when we were six-
Lying on that dewy, dark lawn
We thought we were brave and strong
We thought life was an adventure waiting to be had
And the world would cheer us on.
Our eyes were big as we shared the stars together
Our hearts were young and our friendship was unbreakable.
I poured my soul to you, and you poured yours to me.
Once when we were six-
whispering in the darkness,
Feeling warm and safe,
Watching fireflies dance in the night-
I felt like life was true at last.
