Soulless

Soulless

A Poem by Matthew Clough

I spent all my money on alcohol.

I shook hands with your new lover

when I wanted to spit in his face.

I draped myself in cardigans

and sipped martinis in the dark

while I let faceless men feel me.

And I couldn’t say no, so I said

nothing, hoping for God in

silence, an impossible dream

among soaking wet blankets.

I’ve exhausted my energy on

zeroes, so when they all start

reaching through me, I don’t

even feel their fingers, and

they won’t feel my pulse.

I like your strong opening line. It make the reader ask, "Why?" and forces them to continue on to find out. I also like how every stanza became one line larger every time. Good read.

A very dark and riveting poem with a bone-chilling story to it. I would recommend having more descriptive imagery in future pieces. Other than that, brilliant.
