I Know Rivers

I Know Rivers

A Poem by Matthew Clough

You flow:

Pulsing, like the lapping waves

brushing cattails at the bank.

You surprise me

at every twist, pulling me beneath

your glossy surface. I breathe bubbles.

Drowning

was a terrifying notion to me

until I kissed your lips and felt

all the hues

of blue come flooding in, soft and smooth

as the ripples of a single stone skipped.

And I’m there now:

below the waves, flowing through you

in a slow tumult toward the sea

where all rivers meet

in one bright white cascade,

the moment of freedom reinvented.
