The spell

The spell

A Chapter by Denisa Matei

I was really happy because I just received that book. I was smiling, I didn't care about anything. But as soon as I arrived outside, I was greeted by the night. It looks like I spent a lot of time in the library, reading Shadow's story.

I will tell you a little secret: I'm afraid of the dark. And no one knows this. However, after a few minutes during which I tried to be more brave. I went down the stairs really quickly and then I started to walk towards the guesthouse. I was walking really fast because I wanted to get to my destination as soon as possible. Right now, I felt like a movie character, a character who spends the night on the road and who thinks that someone is always behind him.

However, I wasn't scared that someone follows me, I was frightened by the emptiness of the streets. I remember the ghost towns from TV, because, right now, the city looks like one. The lights from the pillars were turned on and they illuminated the empty streets. Sometimes, a  dog or a cat appeared from the dark, but they always went back to sleep. After a few minutes I finally arrived in the area know as the Hyacinth Street, the street was the guesthouse was.

I opened the door slowly and then I went in. I hoped that everyone was sleeping because I didn't want to give explanations about my delay.

"Your keys, my lady!" a voice said.

That scared me a little. I turned around slowly and I met the women who owns the property. She looked like she saw an angel. Her gaze was fixed on me and for I thought that she was in trance. No one said anything, but, after a few minutes, I finally asked:

"Are you okay? Why are you looking at me like that?"

"I was worried! A lot of time passes since you left! I thought something happened to you!" she said, now smiling as if nothing had happened.

"Okay!" I said  and I took the keys from her.

I went  upstairs and then I entered my room. After spending a few minutes in the bathroom, I returned to the bedroom and sat down on the bed. And because I was really tired, I fell asleep really fast.

Trees, many trees! A forest, a forest surrounded by a darkness whose color was similar to that of a coal. I was in a meadow full of flowers, whose color I could distinguish with the light provided by the Queen of the Night , the moon.

"The spell! Read the spell!" I heard a voice said, and I thought it came from behind me.

I turned around quickly but no one was there. It was just me there, me and a few little birds, but they were sleeping.

"Read the spell from the first page!" that voice said again.

After I looked around me again, I started to run. I was scared. I walked through the wet grass, flattening it to the ground. I didn't care, I didn't care about anything at that moment. I was just trying to find my way out of the forest. Suddenly, a boy appeared in front of me. I couldn't see his face, it was really dark.

"Read the spell! he said slowly, approaching me. I think he wanted to touch me. He finally reached me and he raised his hand...

I woke up. It was just a dream. I looked at the clock. It was 9 am. I got out of the bed. I took a tissue and dabbed my forehead with it because I was full of sweat. I went to the bathroom and took a shower.

After a relaxing moment during which I forgot a little about that dream,  I got dressed and I went back to the bedroom. I took the bed from the bedside and the I sat on the bed. I started to look thought it, trying not to think about that spell. However, I couldn't forget that boy's words.

Is he the vampire from that book? And if he is that guy, how did he get into my dream, because from what I know, he's locked into a book. I wonder what's gonna happen if I'll read that spell. It can't be that bad. I mean, there are just a few words written on a page. I don't think something will happen.       After I asked myself these questions, I decided to follow my decision. I looked through the book again until I reached the first page. There, I found a spell formed of three strophes, which looked more like a poem. I started to read.

                                     For decades you were closed

                                            You sat there froze,

Through the book your soul was flying

                                         And you were slowly dying.

I call you to tell you story

To make you talk without any worry

I call you to talk about your life,

Because I want to make you feel alive.

I invoke you with fire and water

Because I want you to live your happily ever after,

I invoke you with fire and snow

Because I don't want you to be alone.

As soon as I spoke the words written on the first page of the book, the air in the room suddenly became very cold and everything around me was surrounded by smoke. The lights started to flicker heavily and suddenly, on the window in front of me appeared the words "I see you." Now I realized that the old lady was right when she told me not to read the spell.
