playing for keeps

playing for keeps

A Poem by mercy party

lately you've been like a disappearing Hollywood starlet
a story that seemed to have no end until now
God knows i tried to guard and guide you
but i was blind to
your youthful illusions
you say you're playing for keeps
so why are you hitting the streets
you're playing for keeps
so why are you hitting the streets
if you're playing for keeps
and i see what looks like someone running away
the closer i get i start to see that it's just me
it was never us and i'm damn sure it was never you
so what are you trying to do?
you say you're playing for keeps
so why are you hitting the streets
you're playing for keeps
so why you hitting the streets
if you're playing for keeps
someday someone will tell it like it is
until then you'll be getting fooled again
the complacency of a generation
a generation of woes

A quality over quantity poem with just the right amount of repetition that adds more meaning to this poem.

The first stanza is well-written and I like the mention of "Hollywood Starlet", making it seem like she's from the 1940's or 1950's.

Nice poem, Mercy! :)

You are a true pro! Classy description, your writing has an old fashion feel to it. Who is in the picture?

Mimi Boomhower. The plot thickens, no?
I like the way that some of your poems also come across like song lyrics. Unfortunately although I love music and play music hours each day I have no creative musical talent. Your last verse does actually pay a nice tribute to Pete Townsend although I suspect it wasn't intended. (My Generation & Won't get Fooled Again) :)
