Freedom

Freedom

A Poem by Michael
"

Just what are we doing letting the government have such control over us?

"

I have fought for this country,
my part to keep it free.
I served upon the oceans
and sailed out on the sea.

I followed in the footsteps,
of great men from before.
I stood the line, passed the test,
kept danger from our shore.

But now I have to wonder,
just why I served it so,
the place it seems we're going
destroys this status quo.

At home our life is changing,
and things are strange to me.
Freedom's become some catch phrase,
and not a thing to be.

We submit to the searches,
and say that it is best.
What we give up's our freedom,
to those who beat their chest.

This is the biggest danger,
the lot of us do face.
It comes from those who lead us,
not from some other place.

It seems they had no stomach,
to serve this mighty land,
but still they claim some knowledge,
on where to make our stand.

I say we hired some cowards
to lead us in this fight.
They only line their pockets
and hide from what is right.

The problem that's before us
is not the things they say.
It's more that we believed them,
and let them lead the way.

Don't give away your freedoms,
paid for in precious blood.
Gather them all close to you,
like Noah in a flood.

Now look around and question
ones who want to lead.
Ask what they think of freedom
and judge if there is greed.

For the loss of it is subtle
but hard to make return.
Stand up to all encroachment
before that’s what we learn.

No criticisms here. You express my exact sentiments. I usually try to stay away from politics here at the cafe, but your poem rings so true. Sam
