Southern Memories

Southern Memories

A Poem by Michael Hess

It's the kind of night where anything can change you

And everything you're feeling is on your mind

The river's flowin, cigarettes are glowin

Life is better without knowin

What will happen to you the next night

Oh, come on, girl

We'll have our fun

Drivin down the dirt road.

I am yours

And the world is ours

So just tell me where to go

Life's too short to work all day

So let's get out and get away.

Hangin down by the river

With our friends and our buddy Jack.

Cause all you have at the end of your life

Are the memories of all those nights

Drivin down the road with the radio blastin

Singin along and speedin faster and faster

That's where it's at.

It's the kind of night where there's nothin goin' on

And we're all sittin' bored as hell by the phone

Our hearts are burnin' and the wheels start turnin'

How to live, babe, that's what we're learnin'

Turn around, next thing you know

We're long gone.

'Cause life's too short to work all day

So let's get out and get away.

Hangin down by the river

With our friends and our buddy Jack.

Cause all you have at the end of your life

Are the memories of all those nights

Drivin down the road with the radio blastin

Singin along and speedin faster and faster

That's where it's at.

Layin in the grass watchin' the clouds,

Trespassin where we're not allowed.

Pull out the flask and feel the spark

Lightin the fire inside our hearts

Countin the stars and sittin in the moonlight

Don't wanna say goodnight

Until I know that you'll be by my side

And everything's alright.
