For Lola

For Lola

A Poem by Michael Hess

You’ve yelled and screamed and cried your tears;

You’ve pointed fingers and thrown your spears.

Some of us have learned from our mistakes,

Some others like you simply turn into fakes.

You tried to prevent what she’s already become,

But now you’re becoming another one.

The devil she’s turned into is her own making;

The blame is all hers for the taking.

Knowing the truth and looking back,

I see the fault is not on Alex’s back;

Not even on Phillip’s, despite what you say.

Do what I did –- get your story straight.

She made her decisions of her own free will,

And having that knowledge just gives me chills.

She’s not the girl who she once was.

She falsely threw even me under the bus.

She easily denounced me and the friendship we had.

I only tried to make her happy, and she stabbed me in the back.

You’re doing the same, and you have resolved

To betray me over something in which I was no longer involved.

Why can't you see? You’ve all become her,

My former friends who threw me from your worlds.

Don’t you remember our “Nights in Rodanthe”?

And a friendship so strong, we called it everlasting?

And all the times I promised to always be there?

Or the times I wiped away your heavily flowing tears?

Lola, just in case there is any doubt,

Don’t think for a second I can’t live without.

But I don’t want to lose you, a friend so close,

Someone who's meant more to me than the world’s stock of gold.

You’ve been my best friend, and you’ve changed my life.

But if you truly want to discard me, please, at least tell me why.

I at least deserve that if we're going to end,

After this girl has lied and turned friends against friends.

I've been wondering how much of this year going by

Has been a changed girl's games and convincing lies.

She's been trying to sell us out right from the start,

Faster than a classic car without any parts.

So I'm through with your lies and all your new games,

Unless you open your eyes. But as I go, just please...

Don't repeat her change.
