Knock It Out of Me

Knock It Out of Me

A Poem by Michael Howell

Every day

when I lived there

on the beach, next to the pier,

I would wake up at dawn

and watch the sun sift through

the fog of the ocean

About mid day I would

steal myself away from my computer

and walk to the tier and back

looking for many familiar faces

and finding only some

At four

I would wade out

into the water

until I was hopping on two toes

to stay afloat

and shiver until I was warm

then I would find solid ground

and wait for the waves

and as they grew above me

I'd throw my arms out straight

and close my eyes

The wave would knock me

off my feet

and my nose would

fill with salt and sand

as my world flipped and I

lost my gravity.

And there was peace.
